Foreign BeggarsIt may sound dramatic, but 2003 was a historical year: the invasion of Iraq took place and the Foreign Beggars released their debut album ‘Asylum Speakers’. Since then they have been like herpes, coming back when you least expect it. So after catching up with them via World Wide Web, we spoke about why Jeremy Kyle is needed to mediate the abundance of unused tooth brushes, fanatical fans and the consequences of eating spicy food.

Lazy HabitsMention the name Lazy Habits and a wealth of words comes to mind. Not only have they made the rounds to every festival going, they have also graced the same stage as the legendary Mos Def himself. Citing influences from Roots Manuva, to Nina Simone and even Prince this eight strong band definitely knows how to shake up the boundaries of hip-hop. It was pleasure to have a chinwag with James (the front man) to find out what these crazy kids are all about.

His deep-rooted love for music transcended through the years and the self-proclaimed “instrumentalist” co-created Soul Students Records at Hampton University in 2003.

London Riots 2011 - Time For ChangeI wrote these lyrics while helicopters were flying overhead and sirens blazed through the streets, I felt upset at the misrepresentation of my community and culture as a whole and wanted to speak out as i believe many others would like to do too. I was also alarmed by the reckless attitudes of those who have given up on the system and felt that only people from the community could reach out to them before things spiralled out of control.

Mr Thing - It’s A DJ ThingThe festival season is in full swing both at home and abroad, with The Big Chill (4-7 August) and Sziget (8-15 August) creating the ultimate start to the eighth month. One man who is certainly making the most of his air miles, with an imminent mini tour of Australia, and having recently returned from what Time Out has described as “perhaps the summer’s most beautiful festival”, Soundwave Festival (July 21-24, Petrcane, Croatia), is of course Mr Thing.

RedramaIBMCs headed up to Finland to find out more about Finnish Hip Hop. We interviewed Laineen Kasperi, Redrama and Jonti and Shaka. In the Finnish Hip Hop scene most of the rap is in Finnish. One of the biggest emcees to rap in English is known as Redrama. He is a Helsinki-based rapper and producer. His first breakthrough was by winning the Finnish MC-Championship in 2001, the same year his first EP came out.
