On Wednesday 12th July hundreds of music fans will descend upon Cargo nightclub in London to witness a competition like no other: music being made solely with the mouth. Eight of the country’s finest human beatboxers will fight it out to become the National Champion, and to represent the UK at the World Championships in Tokyo this Winter.
Human beatboxing, the art of replicating entire songs using nothing but the vocal chords, is by far the fastest growing trend in youth culture since hip hop began. Beatboxing is astonishing for all onlookers, and this UK Championship, now in its second year, is being held by global beatbox portal HumanBeatbox.com. After vicious heats from Newcastle to Southampton via Leeds, Bristol and Nottingham, this event at Cargo combines the London heat and the UK Final in one massive event. The winner of each regional heat qualifies for the ‘8-Mile’ style knock-out final, where they will have to win the crowd’s support to defeat their opponent in three intense rounds.
And the stakes are high, with the prizes including: a representation deal from beatbox agency AllFromTheMouth.com, a heap of goodies from mic(ism), THTC and Shure, plus all flights paid to Japan to take part in the international battles. Three internationally respected beatboxers will be on the panel to act as judges: A Plus, who founded HUMANBEATBOX.COM, Shlomo, the Bjork collaborater, and RoxorLoops who is a member of the current Team World Champions and is the Belgian national champion.
The night in itself is not just about battling. DMC Champion DJ Matman will be playing an exclusive scratch set, and the whole evening is hosted by legendary Foreign Beggars MC Orifice Vulgatron. Vocal experimentalist Joe Driscoll will also be performing his unique mix of beatbox, didgeridoo, guitar and harmonica, and we will be treated to a live PA from ace hip-hop producer DJ IQ. 2006 UK Beatbox Championships London heat and UK Finals Venue: Cargo, 83 Rivington St, Shoreditch, London, EC2A 3AY Date: Wednesday 12th July 2006 Time: London heat: 7-9pm, UK Finals: 9.30pm-1am Tickets: £7 in advance from www.ticketweb.co.uk, or £8 on the door before 9pm / £10 after
