Leeds United news, polls and opinion by Lee Betteridge

  • Ex-Leeds striker fighting cancer
The game of football has been put back into perspective today as Leeds fans everywhere will want to offer their heart-felt support to two former players and their families. First news broke on Friday that striker Geoff Horsfield has retired from football after revealing he is suffering from testicular cancer. Following that was the deeply sad news that Feziwe Radebe, wife of United legend Lucas, lost her brave battle against bowel cancer early on Saturday.

Feziwe, aged just 34, was originally diagnosed with the illness during her husband's testimonial year with Leeds, and her passing has left Lucas devastated. She is also survived by their two young children Lucas Hugo, nine, and Owami, aged four.

Barnsley-born Horsfield, also 34, is set to undergo surgery next week, and has been informed he has a good chance of recovery after the diagnosis was made early. In spirit typical of his robust forward play the ex-Halifax Town hitman is maintaining his positive attitude, stating: 'All I'm thinking about now is beating this. I've always been a fighter right through my football career and I'm going to fight this and win.'

Geoff has the best wishes of all Leeds supporters who I'm sure will want to wish him a speedy recovery. My thoughts and condolences are also with the Radebe family at this sad time.

  • Posh supremo - 'Leeds fans are absolutely fantastic'
Peterborough United's director of football Barry Fry has revealed the huge amount of interest generated by Leeds United's impending visit to London Road this Saturday. The Cambridgeshire outfit are expecting a bumper pay-day as the White Army marches south for a high-noon League One showdown.

'We're hoping for a sell-out,' confirmed Fry. 'Leeds fans are absolutely fantastic and I think Leeds have sold 4,200 tickets for an away game. They have been selling like hot cakes and there's loads of interest here.'

The ex-Birmingham City boss fully expects Gary McAllister's side to be celebrating a title triumph next May, and is anticipating a thorough examination for the Posh this weekend. 'This is a massive test for us,' he added. 'I anticipate Leeds to win the league this year, there's no doubt in my mind about that. They've got the fanbase behind them to roar them on.'

'I know Gary McAllister very well and thought he was a fantastic appointment. And he's the right man to lead them to the 'good old days' again. He's an excellent manager and has got a nice blend of youth and experience together. Despite all the club's troubles, Leeds fans have stuck by their team and remained very loyal and they, above all, deserve to go up through the leagues.'

  • Young Hereford stopper catches McAllister's eye as Leeds close in on summit
Hereford United's 21-year-old keeper Darren Randolph made a big impression on Leeds United manager Gary McAllister with a virtuoso performance in front of 25,626 spectators at Elland Road yesterday afternoon. However, the young Irishman was powerless to stop Leeds charge towards the top of the table, as Andy Robinson (pictured) proved the match-winner for the second game running, stooping to clinch the points 18 minutes from time.

'I had a little feeling that the keeper might do well, and he proved me right,' said McAllister. 'Steve Staunton took him into the Under 21's and had him part of the B International for the Republic (of Ireland), and said just keep an eye on the keeper, he's one that he rates. And when that gets said, I don't know it's sods law isn't it...he didn't disappoint, he's one that really impressed me today.'

On the goal that clinched the points: 'My initial reaction was the same as Andy's, I thought the keeper caught it from behind the line, but its nice to see people following up. It was another wonder save but it was nice to see Robbo get it over the line.'

'The facts are we had over 60% of possession, we had 31 efforts at goal to Hereford's four, but we could have been punished at the end. But i think over the piece we deserved to win.' The victory has made it a perfect month for the club, with six win out of six in all competitions, leaving them just one point behind leaders Oldham Athletic.

  • Carlisle boss salutes 'future champions'
Carlisle United boss John Ward was full of praise for opponents Leeds United after seeing his side surrender their unbeaten home record at Brunton Park today. The Whites recorded another terrific result, their third powerful and composed league victory on the bounce, following strikes from front-pairing Luciano Becchio (pictured left) and Jermaine Beckford.

These (Leeds) are future champions aren't they, everyone is looking at that, and I think that they are a better team than they were last year,' confessed Ward. 'With people like Delph and Becchio that give them extra invention I think and composure with the ball. So they have got a real good crop coming through, we have had a good bench today but when you look at their bench as well they are good players.'

'I think that there have been two good teams here and they are absolutely delighted to get the win because they know that it has been a tough fixture. We are a wee bit behind them though and we have got to keep working hard to try to achieve that level if you like at our league.'

'I think that the better side won and I think that we were that little bit behind in passing and keeping the ball. Then the final part of the game, the clinical stuff, they have put two goals in the back of our net and we haven't. We have not been up to Leeds United's standards today. We have got to say that and accept it and work hard to be a bit better.'

  • 'It's our biggest game' - Ward
Carlisle United boss John Ward is anticipating another cracking game when his side host promotion rivals Leeds United at Brunton Park tomorrow.

The clubs met in last season play-off semi-final, with the Whites emerging victorious from a tie where both legs were won by the away team, and despite ultimate disappointment, both teams have shown no after-effects in putting together strong starts to the new campaign.

'I think it's our biggest game,' said Ward. 'With respect to all the other teams in the league we'll probably get the biggest crowd for Leeds United. They bring a big following, they still have the aura of the big club, the European (Champions League) team etc. We all remember that.'

'I think it's a big day and obviously the four games last year that we had against each other were a real good advert for the two clubs. Off the pitch we've got no chance of competing but on the pitch we're reasonably close, and hopefully that will be the case again tomorrow.'

'We both will try to go out to attack and that will provide for an open game and entertaining for people to watch.'

  • Unstoppable Leeds?
Just 5 weeks into the new season and Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford has already hit double figures as he spearheads the clubs promotion charge.

His latest brace, coming in yesterday's 3-1 victory at Swindon Town, being all the more sweet considering the Whites were forced to play over 80 minutes with only 10 men, following a deserved red card for full-back Alan Sheehan. After Simon Cox had equalised for the hosts on half-time, a Neil Kilkenny free-kick restored Leeds advantage.

It was a performance which proved Gary McAllister's troops have the ability to adapt their approach as circumstances dictate. Following the previous weeks sublime 5-2 demolition of Crewe Alexandra, United displayed tremendous guile and tenacity to wrestle the spoils and secure victory in relative ease.

Robins manager Maurice Malpas was furious, branding his team's defending 'pathetic'. Nevertheless he was forced to admit that 'Leeds just passed it about and were in charge'.

McAllister, understandably, was full of praise for the attitude and work rate of his side. 'We had 10 men willing to fight and kick for each other', he enthused. United's boss clearly believes he side are now moving up through the gears, having risen to 4th place as the league table begins to take shape, adding: 'That was the best performance since I've been manager'.

  • Crewe cut down to size by Leeds
Leeds United stormed to a 5-2 victory over Crewe Alexandra at Elland Road this afternoon. After committing himself to the club for another 4 years local lad Fabian Delph opened the scoring with a stunning strike on 26 minutes.

It was all United and just 10 minutes later the advantage was doubled when Alan Sheehan smashed in a screamer from fully 30 yards. Within 4 minutes of the restart Jonathan Douglas joined the party adding a belter of his own to well and truly cut Crewe down to size.

Then on 67 minutes Jermaine Beckford headed his eighth goal of the campaign following good work by substitute Andy Robinson. With 8 minutes remaining Robinson added a long-range effort of his own to make it 5-0.

But an amazing game had even more drama in added time. Defender Lubomir Michalik was sent for an early bath after receiving his second yellow card. Alexandra then hit 2 quick-fire goals in the space of as many minutes through Zola and Bopp to add some degree of respectability to the scoreline after a hugely entertaining encounter.

  • Don't believe the hype - no points deduction for Leeds United
Football's doom and gloom experts are rubbing their hands at the possibility of Leeds United facing yet another points deduction, due to admitting a charge of using an unlicensed agent during the purchase of Anthony Elding.

The Daily Mail, amongst others, have jumped on the bandwagon citing Luton Town's 10 point penalty incurred during the summer. The Hatters had made payments to six different unlicensed agents in arranging transfers, and were hit hard as part of a get tough policy by the Football Association.

For their crime Leeds United have admitted using an unlicensed agent in the Elding transfer which was completed in January this year. The club have stressed that 'no payment has been made or is alleged to have been made to the agent involved in respect of the transfer'.

Over the summer the FA sent all clubs a list of individuals it suspects may be operating in football transfer activity without a license. An FA spokesman stated 'We are taking this proactive step to help clubs and players ensure that they always use authorised agents. Using unlicensed agents can leave clubs and players vulnerable, not only to FA disciplinary action, but to dealing with individuals whose standards of professional conduct are not regulated.'

The Luton Town case involved PAYMENTS to SIX unlicensed agents. Leeds United have admitted using ONE unlicensed agent and making NO PAYMENT. Don't believe all the hype being stirred up by the anti-Leeds press. Expect a slap on the wrist and a fine, then lets get on with getting promoted.

  • Leeds eyeing World Cup host city bid
Leeds chairman Ken Bates has revealed that the club are already making preparations to position themselves and the city as a host venue in the event of England being successful in their bid to host the World Cup in 2018.

In a letter to the club's Members, Bates revealed exclusively that United officials are working closely with Leeds City Council to redevelop the area behind the East Stand, as part of the overall action plan in ensuring that international tournament football returns to Elland Road, following on from the success the city enjoyed during Euro 96.

In an upbeat message to supporters the chairman also reported that the Members Club continues to grow 'from strength to strength' with numbers now exceeding those of last season. In addition the clubs website has recently been extensively updated, and now receives the fourth highest visits in the country behind Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

More importantly to the fans however, will be how Gary McAllister's side equip themselves this afternoon against Bristol Rovers at Elland Road, with the Whites looking to secure their first home league victory and get amongst the early pace-setters.

  • What's the 'big fuss' about Leeds? - Yeovil's Peltier
Yeovil Town earn their 30 pieces of silver tomorrow when they once again welcome Leeds United to Huish Park for a 1pm League One showdown.

The Glovers will be hoping for a repeat of last season's attendance when the lure of Leeds provided them with an official attendance in excess of their grounds capacity, as 9,527 people turned out to watch United's 1-0 victory in a stadium which officially holds just 9,400!

However, not everyone in the Somerset town can see the attraction. Take Lee Peltier for example. For the vast majority who aren't aware, Mr Peltier is Yeovil's right-back, who will take on the task of keeping fellow scouser Andy Robinson quiet.

Although the Whites visit last season dwarfed the Glover's average attendance of just 5,468, Peltier is bemused by the fact that so many of the townsfolk are eager to see their illustrious opponents. 'I don't see what the big fuss is about because they are called Leeds,' he said. 'I just take it as any other game really. Everyone will want to play them because they are a big team but to be fair they are in League One.'

At least once the town's big payday is out of the way Peltier can go back to playing in front of the five and a half thousand crowds he so obviously prefers. I somehow suspect that his chairman would much prefer to see his side host the Mighty Whites every week.
