  • Grandeurs of Delusion out now!
Brighton based Manipulate has just unveiled the first full length release on his own Nause Corps label, the excellent debut album from Grandeurs Of Delusion titled 'A Stale Breath of Fresh Ahh'. Since he set up the label last year and set it off in style with the excellent 7" 'Bad Karma b/w Strontium Sleazewave' co-produced with Trash Weston from The Orb, we've been waiting for a follow up, and it was worth the wait. G.O.D regroups Manipulate, Deviant Ted and the one and only Square One for 17 tracks of eclectic niceness with scratches and cuts complimenting the production. Guest spots from NozL's Lone Wolf, Lorn and I.D.O round off a musical package that packs a heavy punch. If that's not enough here's a quote from BBC Radio 1's Mary Anne Hobbs: “Agile and extraordinary rhythms…. Their sinister and intoxicating textures stopped me in my tracks..”. The album is out now in CD and digital formats for the respective prices of 10 and 7 pounds. Go to nausecorps.com and get your ordering on. Shipping is worldwide and there should be some stock in the US and other parts of the world shortly. Oh yeah and the cover artwork is also off the hook.

  • Cuts of Culture 2 - The Podcasts
The follow up to our Cuts of Culture compilation will finally see the light of day this summer, as a series of exclusive multi-content podcasts. Originally planned for a 2006 release, as a CD/DVD package, we feel times are changing and that exposure, not profit, is the key issue here. Hence we intend to make this release available FREE via a dedicated series of podcasts - the first time anyone has used podcast techology to make available a complete package that would normally be on CD and DVD. These podcasts will be broadcast via the Turntable Radio feed. This includes 6 exclusive videos, bonus tracks, scratch beats, full artwork and liner notes as well as the compilation mix from 2tall. Artists featured on the compilation, tracks and videos include D-Styles, 2tall, Excess, Netik, ieMERGE, Tayone, Phonomorphia, Exile (from Emanon), Dq, DJ Baku and many more. As was the original intent, this second volume aims to showcase even more of the established and upcoming worldwide talent including collaborations with established producers from the worlds of hip hop and electronic music. Once more this is about showcasing the music that is being worldwide, and too often ignored or unheard of by fans and the wider public and media in general. The podcasts will start on the 3rd week of July, and will be available one a week for 8 weeks, culminating with the compilation mix from 2tall. If you're not already subscribed to the Turntable Radio podcasts you can do so in many ways: load up iTunes, go to podcast directory and search for Turntable Radio, then click subscribe. Or subscribe directly using most of the available podcatchers by using our Feedburner link - feeds.feedburner.com/turntableradio. Below is a full tracklist of the podcasts contents and you can check our trailer on youtube (above). Also look out for regular Turntable Radio podcasts and a special one off to be aired during the summer as well.

  • DJ Klock RIP
It's with great sadness that we found out yesterday that Ryo Kato aka DJ Klock passed away ten days ago. Klock was one of the most interesting producers and DJ to come out of Japan and the post-DJ Krush era, a truly unique and interesting artist. I was first introduced to his work by Tatsuki, during the work I was doing on the new generation of Japanese DJs, producers and turntablists in 2005 and 2006. And it was last summer that Klock's wife, Yuki contacted me and sent me a huge package containing copies of Klock's last album and recent works. This, alongside the music of his I had previously found, completed a picture of a man who was truly on his own, working on musical tangents and directions in which most people didn't dare go. Whilst I had never had the chance to meet him, something I'd hoped to do this year, the discussions I had with him and his wife and the pieces I wrote about him left me feeling like I knew him, if only through his music. And that's why the news of him taking his life, and leaving behind his wife and kid, are all the more so sad. Wherever he is now we can only hope he's happy, and whilst we may be sad now he leaves behind a body of work that will continue to live on after him - from his solo work to his work with bands like Cacoy. And so I can only urge you to go out and discover this work if you haven't, or continue to if you already know of him. He will be sadly missed. Rest in peace DJ Klock. You can read the feature on DJ Klock we ran last year, here, as well as a 2003 Japan Times article on his work here. You can purchase some of his music outside of Japan over at Ropeadope records and Rumraket.

  • 2tall presents Dudley and Georgia - Beautiful Mindz
2012 is approaching fast... and so ahead of the forewarned millenial tensions, fellow minds 2tall, Dudley Perkins (aka Declaime) and Georgia Anne Muldrow bring you 'Beautiful Mindz' - an album as deep as the prophecies and universal truths it talks about. 2tall's first full length offering since his debut album, 'Beautiful Mindz' is a showcase of the new directions and work the man has been looking into over the last few years. This time 2tall is at the production helm of this spaceship, directing Dudley and Georgia over a collection of deep instrumentals that fit the vocals like a glove. The album has been a long work in progress, stemming from a chance encounter and short session between 2tall and Dudley back in 2005. 2 years and some much longer and deeper sessions later and 'Beautiful Mindz' is ready to be unleashed. Like a lot of good music it talks best by itself, so I won't indulge in mass amounts of write ups and praise, but just leave it as what I believe it is - a fuckin good album that deserves to be heard by many people. 2tall turned in an amazing effort production wise - showing a new side to his musical persona and bringing in some amazing vocal contributions from Dudley and Georgia. With the working process having been a long winded one, where 2tall finished the album around the vocal sessions recorded in 2005, it's amazing how easily the album flows by and how natural it feels. Anyways as I said the music speaks best by itself, so get your right clicking on and download this promo mix by 2tall. You can also check out an exclusive from the album on the recent TTR podcast and check out more audio previews over at 2tall's myspace page. 'Beautiful Mindz' lands in the summer of 2007 on Eclectic Breaks records, CD album only for the time being.

  • New DJ Baku releases
More Japanese news this month (hardly surprising since I moved here two months ago), this time from DJ Baku. Baku has over the years been one of the most interesting artists to come out of the turntablist boom in Japan, and the post DJ Krush era of tablists, DJs and producers. After a lot of years grafting on the underground and doing his thing in and around Tokyo and Japan, he finally released his debut album in 2006, 'Spinheddz', and proved that he was definitely one of the most interesting artists on the scene right now. And he hasn't let off since then, touring regularly and more recently releasing a bunch of stuff including the following:

  • Kentaro's first album - Enter
Been talking about this for a little while, and it's finally incoming. DJ Kentaro, the Japanese tablist and all round nice guy best known for his flawless DMC win in 2002 and subsequent onslaught of tours and gigs, will be releasing his debut album on Ninja Tune in late April. Titled 'Enter', the release features collaborations with The Pharcyde, Hifana, Hunger and fellow Ninja and Big Dada artists Spank Rock and New Flesh. Don't be expecting an all out scratch affair and nerdy wet dream though - 'Enter' primarily showcases Kentaro's production chops, which happen to include the turntable as a fairly important part of his set up. There are some more tablist minded interludes and short tracks, including the Hifana collabo, but overall the album definitely sounds more like Kentaro's sets and influences than anything else. Electronica and especially drum n bass can clearly be heard in a few tracks, including 'Trust'. If you remember his Ninja Tune mix, which is partly the reason for his being signed to the label, than you'll have a fairly clear idea of what to expect in parts. Elsewhere there are some more hip hop minded tracks, such as the Pharcyde collabo, and overall the sound is definitely one of club music - you might well bump it at home or on your iPod but this was made for the clubs and the dancefloor and you can expect to hear a majority of the tracks in his forthcoming world tour.

  • Gli Originali
Gli Originali – Live in Rome, 20/12/06 ‘The grass is always greener on the other side’ as the saying goes. Living in London you have access to a range of music and performances on a regular basis, but there always seems to be events and gigs outside of London that you wish you could go and see – whether it’s near or far away. The lure of this greener musical grass was enough to convince me to make a trip down to Rome in December to go and see Gli Originali, an Italian music project regrouping some of the country’s finest hip hop artists with a 20 piece live band directed by Franco Micalizzi. Micalizzi is renowned throughout Italy, and parts of the world, for his work composing scores for a string of Italian and American b-movies in the 70s. The scores have earned him a reputation as they are amongst the finest examples of orchestral jazz funk from the era. Micalizzi was working at the same time as the great Ennio Morricone, and while Morricone is renowned for his more minimalist, tense and classically inspired scores, Micalizzi’s work was much more upbeat and frenetic, with a big Afro-Caribbean influence. While the movies are rarely known outside of Italy, the scores have become prized possessions for producers, DJs and collectors.

  • Skrecz battle in Poland goes international
The good people behind Skrecz, the leading Polish turntablist site, are pushing things forward this year and expanding their recently established battle to welcome international heads. The 2007 Skrecz.com Battle, held at the end of February, will this year host showcases from the likes of 2tall and Rafik as well as entrants from other European countries, including quite a few Scandinivian DJs who will be coming down en force. The event will also be filmed by our good friends at DJ Battle TV. In addition they've secured sponsorship from Eclectic Breaks and the battle will be followed by a club night and feature visual works from VisualArt Project.
