Hip Hop Colony is a film about the Kenyan hip-hop explosion. Its produced by two young Kenyan filmmakers now based in the US - Michael Wanguhu producer / director and Russell Kenya writer / producer. The film takes us on an interesting visual experience that takes us on the journey hip-hop has taken in Kenya.

The hip-hop industry, (better known as Genge or Kapuka music) in Kenya speaks fully about where hip-hop has been, where it is today, and where they think its going in regards to growth and acceptance in Kenya and ultimately worldwide.

Kenyan MC's like their other counterparts around the globe, use hip-hop to talk about real life situations and cleverly lyrically express life for a large percentage of the youth in Kenya. The music varies from club bangers, to rhymes with deep lyrics that go as far as giving a young fresh view on Kenya's political scene and its effects on the countries citizens. The response to Kenyan hip hop in the country has gotten attention of the government in certain instances because of the clever lyrics the MC's use to talk about political situations that are more effective in getting the point across.

Hip Hop Colony, documents how the art has been given a Kenyan twist. It also shows that what was not ordinarily taken seriously has grown and the response and appreciation it is getting now. Producers, DJ's and MC's have added professional value to the skill. Kenyan MC's have breathed new life into hip-hop that cannot be ignored, and hip hop colony, shows just that.

The Film has been shown across the globe and won many awards to date. This is an indication that the world is noticing the Kenyan version of hip hop, because it's no different from any other kind of hip hop.
