Confucius MC - Eyes Don't Shine

One of the best tracks to be taken from the recent LP Somewhere is Eyes Don’t Shine by Confucius MC. Eyes Don’t Shine is a relatively short burst of brilliance compared to some of its neighbours on the album, but that’s all the time it takes to draw us into Confucius’s world; a realm where penmanship and insight combine to illuminate the listener’s mind.

As with the rest of the album, Keor Meteor is the man behind the boards, spearheading the jazz-fuelled odyssey that makes up the backbone of ‘Somewhere’. The production on ‘Eyes Don’t Shine’ is a distinctly stripped back affair, which allows the focus of the track to remain on Confucius’s lyricism.  That lyricism is the same captivatingly rhythmic blend of philosophy and flexing, as Confucius drops gems regarding the struggles of life.

Listen / Beyond the maze in the distance / They was trying to reach out / But was greeted with much resistance“, alongside jabs at the mediocrity that taints the culture – “Your album sounds like a cast off / Can’t get your bars off / I’m in the lab writing my arse off / Lighting up Stardawg“.

Landing in the final section of the album, ‘Eyes Don’t Shine’ serves as the perfect parting gift, thanks to the mixture of melody and craftsmanship which Confucius injects into the track with ease, providing us a bold reminder of his appeal as an artist in the process.

Lyrics

Indeed it’s a trek / Could find it hard just keeping your step / Watching a man sell himself / For a piece of respect / But we are free to accept / We are equally as free to reject / Listen / Beyond the maze in the distance / They was trying to reach out / But was greeted with much resistance / In the foggy city / Orange street lights that change the hue / Ghosting through / This street life that changes you / A dedication to the more focused / When the door opens / Then it’s your opus / Step light like I know something / But all there is to truly know is that I know nothing / Your album sounds like a cast off / Can’t get your bars off / I’m in the lab writing my arse off / Lighting up Stardawg / Flying my ship like Star Fox Zero / Stuck in a fairy tale but you can’t spot the hero

When my light dies out / And my eyes don’t shine / Put my message in a bottle / Hope you find those rhymes x 4

Fabled / Still trying to build stairways to Babel / Clogged airwaves / And air raids are the staple / Awards for fair play / Prepared graves for the faithful / Only few men prepare plates for the table / When I rhyme it’s like a wide angle / That’s slow panning / We used to have five channels / For programming / Now we sacrifice the five senses / For five minutes / Of worthless fame / Before a certified witness / No regard for the sanitation / Busy trying get a repost for validation / Cosied up in the confusion / Keep it passive / While your whole life story is placed on a piece of plastic / Pocket size / We’re still living through a prophets eyes / While the hearts sink and the profits rise / Watch the skies / Like I lost a prize / When all seems lost / I open up my book and I philosophise
