Nightmares On Wax Retrospective N.O.W Is The TimeThe Nightmares On Wax story is one that spans decades and genres. George Evelyn (also known as DJ E.A.S.E) came up in the 80s UK B-Boy and graffiti scene enamoured with New York hip-hop and was an innovator in merging those beats and feelings with the popular sounds of the UK at that time to pioneer what became dubbed "trip-hop".

Releasing classic albums such as 'Smokers Delight' and 'Carboot Soul' and working with the likes of De La Soul and Roots Manuva established NOW as one of the definitive purveyors of hip-hop, funk, dub and soul. 25 years on, his fan base is still growing.

Nightmares on Wax was one of Warp Records' initial signings and they are releasing the N.O.W Is The Time compilation in celebration of George Evelyn's career which has spanned 25 years, which also falls in tandem with Warp's own 25th anniversary this year. A retrospective documentary was directed by Rollo Jackson, giving insight into NOW's long-standing career and twenty five years of music history.

Watch it here:

When asked why he decied to undertake this project, George Evelyn (Nightmares On Wax) responded, "The real heart warming sort of thing about doing this project, and celebrating this project, is that everybody I asked to do a remix was honoured to do it. This is what this has been about is really, really getting back to why you even make music, what is this relationship to music. Because it is fun and I love it. Full Stop".

NOW also shares one of the rarities included on the 'Deep Down: Remixes And Rarities' disc, the De La Soul featured track 'Keep On (86 In It Mix)' which is ought to be available to download from NOW's Soundcloud, but they seem to have messed up the permissions:

When asked to reminisce about Nightmares On Wax in a recent interview, Ashley Beedle started, "The first time I heard A Word Of Science was back in '91 when I worked at Black Market Records in London. I knew something special was going on - it had us all buggin' about the Quincy Jones sample in 'Nights Interlude'. The album was 60 mins 33 secs of bliss straight outta Leeds. Still a landmark album and it's a been a real pleasure and honour to know the man".
