Red Bull Reporter - Report From Red Bull BC OneRed Bull Reporter is a nationwide search to find the best young music and culture, and sports writers, filmmakers, photographers and presenters, giving them the chance of a lifetime: to use their skills and indulge their passions as a Red Bull Reporter.

The most talented young media makers could be selected for one of our many exciting assignments - each designed to give them an amazing experience as a working member of the media - covering world-class sports, cutting-edge music and innovative culture events.  What’s more, Red Bull events happen all over the world and Red Bull’ll be dispatching Reporters out there to cover them!

You might remember that Red Bull Reporter ran an exciting assignment to find a young and enthusiastic writer to report from the infamous B-Boy competition Red Bull BC One in New York in November!

The first Red Bull BC One was hosted in Biel, Switzerland in 2004. The competition then moved to Berlin Germany in 2005; Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2006; Johannesburg, South Africa in 2007; and Paris, France in 2008. In November, for the first time in its five-year history, the world’s most important one-on-one B-Boy competition took place on the streets where Hip-Hop began - New York City, USA. The famed Hammerstein Ballroom hosted the highly anticipated battle where sixteen of the globe’s best dancers competed head-to-head.

Phil Waddell was selected as the Red Bull Reporter writer for the event, and you can check out an exclusive excerpt from his written report below!

Stepping out of a yellow taxi in New York City, outside the Hammerstein Ballroom, the location of the 2009 Red Bull BC One, the first thing I hear is the music coming from inside the venue; it’s Jay Z’s “Empire State of Mind”. Add this to the fact that I’m here in the USA for the first time, and about to take my seat ringside at one of the most prestigious B-boy competitions in the world and you can see why I suddenly get butterflies in my stomach.

I make it inside and take my seat just in time to see the competitors take to the circle for the introduction, sixteen of the world’s best, picked for their uniqueness and dedication to B-boying, and definitely deserving of the deafening applause from the crowd. It’s certainly emotional for everyone here. The sixteen competitors form a ring running around the circle; standing in the middle is our MC for the evening, a certain KRS-One. It’s a powerful scene. KRS-One, the man who is hip hop, surrounded by the latest and greatest ambassadors of B-boying, united where it all began. Our DJ for the evening is DP One, a New York resident and B-boy.  If anyone knows the beats to spin this evening, it’s him.

B-Boys to the circle. The battles commence.
