Breakin’ Bread

The Killer Meters finally release their long awaited debut studio album Breakin Out. Known for their 2005 covers album A Tribute To The Meters the band is steeped in musical history. Front woman Karime Kendra is the daughter of legendary Northern Soul vocalist Ty Karim and writer / producer Kent Harris while Virgil Howe is the son of Prog guitar hero Steve Howe of Yes.

Boundaries are meant to be broken and limits are there to be pushed. Ghost isn't afraid to challenge all preconceptions of what being a producer means and refuses to be pigeonholed by a single category. Known for his hip-hop production and remix work for the likes of Nicole Willis he now ventures into unchartered territory.

On his latest release, ‘Freedom of Thought EP #1’, Ghost, sounding not unlike DJ Shadow at his best, pleasingly mixes guitar samples with big and crunchy un-Hip Hop drums and cymbals to create some nicely emotive pieces. With the added strings and vocal ‘ooohs’ it’s a wonder ‘Way U Feel’ doesn’t come with the sheet music.

We were a bit late catching on to this night, but now that we know about it we had better spread the info. On previous nights the Sensei FM DJs have played and tomorrow we have Reain, Nutty P and Suspense MC taking part in the Freestyle sessions with a live band.

Now for something a little different: What no rap? No, but Ghost, the producer behind Lingua Franca has paid his dues in UK Hip Hop so ‘The EP’ deserves a review.

Britishhiphop.co.uk got to speak to one of the main driving forces behind the fantabulous Breakin' Bread record label. After a long chat we got to find out all about the label and how it is run in a very candid and frank exchange. Peep what Skeg had to say to us as the promotion for their excelent new compilation LP gets up a head of steam...

Skeg and Rob Life started Breakin’ Bread as a club night in 1998 and it has grown to include the record label releasing numerous 7”s, 12”s, CD’s and LP’s. Their first compilation, ‘The Deadly 7” Sins’, was released in 2001 and went on to sell over 10,000 copies worldwide. This new release brings together the best singles since ‘01 plus a few brand new tracks, all for the first time on CD.
 

We all know how Ghost can conjure up those smooth productions which have a timeless quality and are well formed in such a way that they show off whoever he collaborates with in the best light. For this latest single from the man like Ghost he does just that as he gets in Abstract Rude to deliver on the vocal front.

Ghost is without doubt one of the finest producers the UK has produced. With his keen ear he has crafted some exquisite backing tracks which have been graced by some of the world's finest MCs. His latest offering is Basic Instinct which features Abstract Rude on the micfor an offering that is well up to his usual par.

A hip-hop producer and DJ of over ten years experience, Ghost's first 12", Ghost Stories, came out in 2002 and introduced Ghost's deeply musical approach. He developed his blueprint of hip hop with a nod to the past and an eye firmly on the future as 2 more singles followed on Breakin Bread and a number of his productions for MC's came out on other labels (Lowlife, Receptor, Suspect-Packages).
