Reporter Anna Nathanson caught up with super producer and drummer for Plan B and Akala, Cassell. Read him talk on why it’s important not to get caught up in the hype and find out what he has planned for the future…
You’re a jack of many trades. Tell us about some of them?
Cassell: I wouldn’t call myself a jack of many trades. I just like to play different roles within the music field. This includes playing the roles of a drummer, producer, songwriter, teacher, studio engineer and general music business stuff.
What do you prefer most, live performances, or working in the studio?
Cassell: I enjoy both live and studio work as a nice mix keeps me creative and does not get monotonous.
What advice would you give to aspiring drummers out there?
Cassell: Practise many styles of music, listen, learn, network and be humble.
Is it all about the champagne lifestyle?
Cassell: Nah, It’s good to enjoy yourself but never get carried away and believe the hype. Just work as hard as possible.
Do you have any regrets, either in your career or personally?
Cassell: None that I can think of!
What has been the highlight of your musical career to date?
Cassell: Performing in headlining bands for many festivals. Doing workshops and lending my experience to the up and coming musicians.
What would you like to do in the future?
Cassell: I would like to release more of my music, write more for TV and work with as many talented people as possible.
Describe your own musical tastes?
Cassell: I love all types of music.
What have you been up to recently?
Cassell: Recently I have been touring and playing on Live Radio shows with Plan B, Akala, Colin Emanuel, and Keziah Jones. Recording, writing and co-producing with Plan B for his next two albums, which also included putting down a live drum track for a sound track on the Kidulthood sequel, which Plan B has a main role in, while recording and appearing in a video with Akala for his latest single, ‘Comedy Tragedy’.
I have been working with Bassistry Music teaching music workshops, including a workshop for Pinnacle (a charity that provides opportunities for less advantaged kids), writing and recording for a children’s ITV show, ‘Sonny & Jim Jam’ as well as completing 100 sound bytes in different styles for a software program called, ’Music Biz’ for Cimex Production.
In between that I have completed two Dancehall / Reggae albums with artists Syross & Ras ‘Cowboy’ Ranger, mastered my ‘Cassell The Beatmaker’ Mix CD, completed my second live drum sampler CD and Toured with Speaker Corner, a theatre production head by Don Letts.
What’s next for you?
Cassell: Working with Wish Production for another TV Project, Finishing Plan B’s albums, more touring with Akala in the States. Touring with Plan B and other studio projects.
