Having appeared on screens across the globe on American Idol it is no wonder LaToya London is now gracing our airwaves and the Broadway stage with her immense talent. I recently caught up with the star to see what has been keeping her life full of busy and what fans can expect over the coming year.
First of all a lot has happened since American Idol, did you think after you were voted off you would so soon land a record deal?
LaToya London: Yes, I thought I would land a record deal, although, I didn't know how soon.
You have had massive success with two of your singles topping the billboard charts, how does it feel? I mean this must be a dream come true.
LaToya London: It definitely felt like a dream come true. The slightest amount of success is a dream come true, starting out with nothing and ending up with something.
What was it like performing in front of the likes of Simon Cowell?
LaToya London: Performing in front of Simon Cowell was terrifying. You could think your performance was good and then he would think the opposite. So it was like fearing the unknown.
What reaction did you have from the release of your debut album ‘Love and Life’?
LaToya London: I got great reviews from the album. Thank goodness!!
What projects are you currently working on?
LaToya London: I'm currently starring in the role of "Nettie" in the Broadway tour production of The Color Purple. I'm also working on a new album. So stay tuned…
Your music really is full of spirit and feeling, do you write a lot of your own material?
LaToya London: I wrote on 5 of the 14 songs and that's really good for a first time artist. Usually record companyies don't give you that shot. I will definitely be writing more of the next album. Stay tuned…
Was music always your dream and passion?
LaToya London: Yes, music was always my dream and passion since I was a little girl. I would day dream in class at school instead of listening to my teacher.
How does it feel when you are performing to a live audience, that thrill must never get old?
LaToya London: Performing in front of a live audience is so rewarding. I actually enjoy singing live more than singing in the studio. The crowd's yells, screams, and tears confirm to me that I was meant to do this.
Who influences your style?
LaToya London: It's more so "what" influences my style. Life influences me. You'll definitely hear what I mean on this next record.
If you were given the opportunity to work with along side any artist of your choice who would it be and why?
LaToya London: It would be Prince because his music is sexy and innovative.
LaToya London: Yes, I want to give a shout out to my cousin Marva Parrott in Germany. I love you girl!!
