In an era of generic urban music, Mumzy Stranger is set to blast onto the UK scene with a style that is entirely his own. Raised in Plaistow by Bengali parents, Mumzys music blends the bhangra and Bollywood beats of his childhood with the New Jack Swing riffs and reggae-inspired rhythms of his teenage years.
Whether hes rapping or singing, producing or songwriting, Mumzy Strangers wide-ranging musical abilities set him apart from the masses.
Now signed to Rishi Richs Tiffin Beats label, Mumzy is ready to unleash his distinct blend of bashment-flavoured R&B on the world in the form of his seductive new single Fly With Me.
Mumzy Stranger meets British Hip Hop Miss San San:
Hey Mumzy! You have had an amazing year and also won Best Urban Asian Act at Brit Asia Music Awards 2010, how do you feel about your success?
Mumzy Stranger: Amazing! This year has been a whirlwind and winning Best Urban Asian Act at the Brit Asia awards was one the highlights of the year so far! Its all thanks to the fans; I wouldnt be achieving so much if it wasnt for their support.
Rishi Rich helped to get your foot into the door and hes been associated with major mainstream names such as Craig David, Britney Spears, Ricky Martin and Mary J Blige. How has your journey been with Rishi and where do see it headed in the future?
Mumzy Stranger: My journey with Rishi has been amazing since the beginning; its crazy to think that I am working with such a talented producer who has worked with so many great mainstream artists. He has been a great mentor to me and has taught me so much over the past few years and I can only see our journey going further up!
You produced your new single Fly With Me entirely alone, where did you get your inspiration for the new track Fly With Me?
Mumzy Stranger: The inspiration came from pure imagination rather than reality, I just wanted to write a song that makes people feel good and just be free away from problems thats why I wrote Fly With Me as the title speaks for itself.
What do you want to achieve from your music?
Mumzy Stranger: For it to be listened to and enjoyed by the public!
What has been your most memorable musical highlight so far?
Mumzy Stranger: Oh theres been so many! For this year it would be receiving the Best Asian Urban Act at the Brit Asia Awards as it was my first award that I have won so far. Also being one of the few Asian acts to perform ever on the National lottery with Preeya Kalidas was a great experience!
In the music industry, who do you most admire as your role model?
Mumzy Stranger: Michael Jackson always was and will be a role model of mine. He not only inspires me because of his talented singing and dancing skills but through his production skills as well.
You’ve got a Reggae / Dancehall element to your sound. What artists from that scene are you into?
Mumzy Stranger: Buju Banton, Supercat and Collie Buddz.
Your music and style have been compared with Sean Paul how does that make you feel?
Mumzy Stranger: Of course its flattering! Sean Paul is a talented artist and if I happen to sound like him then of course I can only take that as a compliment!
Who would you most like to collaborate with mainstream wise?
Mumzy Stranger: Oh defiantly Keri Hilson!
You had a very successful collaboration with Preeya Kalidass debut single Shimmy, are there any other female artists you would want to work with in the future, or plan to work with?
Mumzy Stranger: Working with Preeya Kalidas was a great experience, but for the time being I am just concentrating on my own solo work but if Keri Hilson is ever in London then I wouldnt say no! (laughs)
Can you name three of your favourite female celebrities?
Mumzy Stranger: Megan Fox, Angelina Jolie and Beyonce!
Tell me something about you that fans would be surprised to hear…
Mumzy Stranger: I am a great cook and probably would have become a chef if I wasnt a singer!
Any final words for the hundreds or thousands British Hip Hop readers?
Mumzy Stranger: Thank you to all my supporters both old and new for all your love and continued support! My new single FLY WITH ME is releasing 10.10.10 on i-Tunes make sure you grab a copy!
