He’s one of the most successful rappers of the past two decades; and he’s turned his hand to other showbiz elements too, taking in acting, TV presenting and even running his own adult film operation. And now legendary rapper Snoop Dogg is turning his hand to horror, in what is being promoted as the illest, sickest release of the year.

Snoop Dogg’s Hood Of Horror is a feature length shlock shocker divided up into three tales, an anthology in the tradition of Creepshow and Tales From The Crypt. Snoop is the hound of hell, more crib-keeper than crypt-keeper, repping the devil and introducing three tales of gore from da ghetto.

And this being Snoop, you can expect it to be over the top, with buckets of blood and gallons of gore as miscreants are offed in a whole host of shocking (and original) ways, including a novel use for one of the rap world’s ubiquitous items, a 40oz bottle of malt.

He also appears in each of the three stories he links together, which follow inhabitants of the hood who go from bling to blood. They follow a graffiti artist who wreaks revenge on street thugs, a spoilt kid who has to live with his father’s army pals before he can inherit a fortune and rapper who must pay for the sins he committed on his way to the top.

Snoop, one of the most instantly recognisable faces of hip-hop and a major international superstar since he burst onto the scene in the early 1990s is joined by an array of familiar names and faces, including Danny Trejo (Planet Terror), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) alongside cameos from the likes of Method Man and Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander for this anthology tale.

This maybe the best bad movie of 2006. Trying to fit three stories into 84 minutes is always going to mean skimping on the depth. The production qualities are high, but the stories are predictable and have been done better elsewhere.
