Bobby Hutcherson - Montara 7" [More Groove Japan]With official Hip Hop remixes of old jazz fusion joints on the up it seems appropriate that prolific and sample friendly vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson sees his superior jam ‘Montara’ - lifted from the classic 1975 LP of the same name - released on 7 inch.

Although the tune itself is great, this is obviously more about showcasing the two remixes. Madlib’s re-rub is familiar from his well received Blue Note remix project a few years back and still sounds nice, managing to capture the meandering vibe and plonk it firmly in a dusty headnod framework. The Root’s version is cool but a little clean and noodly.

Considering the former has already seen the light of day, and the latter has also popped up on another recent Japanese Blue Note remix EP it’s hard to justify the £14 UK price tag; especially when it could probably bag you the original LP. A well intentioned if rather pointless release!
