Black Kent - BiographyAt 22 years old, Black Kent is already one of the most promising MCs of his generation. Born in Africa’s Ivory Coast, this renaissance globetrotter left the shores of the motherland after political battles erupted within the West African country. Finding solace with his family in Kenya, it was during this time that Black Kent discovered his unbridled talent for emceeing.

Along with childhood friend C4, the duo founded their own rap group RSP that went on to gain considerable attention from the local Hip-Hop connoisseurs, all the while solidifying in Black Kent’s mind that music was his calling. However a move to the South of France to continue his studies was only going to bring further notoriety for this ‘diamond in the rough’.

Aligning himself with the already established 99 Pro-G crew, Black Kent made himself as known in France as he was in Africa, with his ability to dominate the mic. 2005 saw him release, the still highly sought after mixtape, Hip-Hop Ressurection. Reconnecting with his long-time friend and rap co-hort, C4 who had also migrated north to France, the duo emerged as The Franchise, becoming a constant on the French Hip-Hop scene.

Black KentDuring the summer of 2006, feeling pangs of homesickness for his native county, Black Kent created an album along with fellow Ivory Coast rapper Sagon called Djafoul Koncept, which was described by Hip-Hop fans hailing from the Ivory Coast as simply a classic. Inspired by the work his friend was producing, agent and long-time friend Curtis ‘Black D’ set about establishing the buzz for Black Kent beyond France.

Securing the label ‘best rapper overseas’ by a bevy of industry heavy weights, Black Kent became familiar with DJ Battle, with whom he concocted the mixtape Back By Popular Demand Vol 1. This project was enough to establish Black Kent as an MC who can easily avoid the language barriers, which many face whilst struggling to rap in their native tongue and English.

Consistently appearing on projects from other acts such as Tyron Carter (M to the P Records / Sony BMG), the highly coveted French R&B singer M Pokora, Elysha (Barclay) and Driver, Black Kent continues to etch his name into the soundscape of French urban music. Now as he embarks on educating the country that birthed the genre he has made his life with his agility and tenacity, Black Kent already has all eyes on him.

With the debut single Pass That, from his forthcoming album Yes I Kent, featuring Aftermath recording artist Bishop Lamont heating up the airwaves, this French lyricist has already secured the attention of some of the Hip-Hop worlds major blogs and websites. A firm favourite. Black Kent’s artistry and his innovative ability to rhyme in both English and French has made him a player to watch in 2009.
