East London DanceUrban Development and East London Dance host Urban East, a week long celebration of urban culture, bringing together music and dance at Stratford Circus in May. It all takes place between Thursday 18th – Thursday 25th May 2006. There is a live music night featuring artists like Klashnekoff and of course there are some serious music seminars.

The Frontline night & lifestyle brand G-Hop will showcase the best in UK hip hop, R&B and grime featuring exclusive new sets from some of the scene’s established heavyweights alongside the cream of the new crop, including artists from the G-Hop roster, Klashnekoff, Soundbwoy Ents, Baby Blue, J2K, Wonder, Excalibah and hip hop magician Dynamo.

Renowned in the underground hip-hop and club dance scenes as “Crutchmaster”, U.S. innovator Bill Shannon brings his unique and vibrant dance technique to Urban East. With his new production Sketchy, the multi-disciplinary artist joins forces with five performers to create a living documentary of street inspired movement including breaking, popping, housing and freestyling.

Inter-Mission is part of a national series of choreographic platforms and brings together five emerging black choreographers showcasing stunning new dance work.

G-Hop host an open session for East London vocalists, MCs and producers to bring in new tracks and ideas in progress. G-Hop – The Artists’ Forum includes a hosted panel where industry A&R representatives provide feedback and an open hour featuring listening stations where vocalists, MCs and artists can exchange ideas.

Looking Back To Go Forward: an essential one-off seminar looking into the rich history of UK soul, R&B, hip hop and urban-based music styles from the ‘70s onwards. Can urban music today draw from the UK’s music history? What lessons have been learnt from artists’ experiences? Is British music of the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s relevant for today’s artists? Panellists include UK artists past and present and label MDs. Hosted by Tony Nwachukwu (CDR)

Urban East will also offer a dance workshop with choreographer and performer extraordinaire Colin Poole in a unique one-day training session. Colin has a great following for his challenging theatrical dance work and was one of the smash hits at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe.
