Roots Manuva To Play Fiesta in the ParkThe Mercury prize nominated artist Roots Manuva will headline a huge musical fundraiser at Fiesta in the Park in Oxford on Saturday, July 2nd to raise cash for the city’s Cowley Road Carnival. A source from the rapper’s management team has confirmed that Roots will play new material from 4everolution during his headline set in Oxford which comes just two months before the album is released in September.

The source could not reveal which songs Roots will choose to play but said his new collaboration with Toddla T - Watch Me Dance could be on the set list as the track gives a good indication of the flavour of his new material.

Appearing alongside the London-born rapper in Oxford’s picturesque South Park will be pioneering Congolese musician Kanda Bongo Man, the hotly-tipped brass covers band Brass Roots, who play everything from Radiohead and the White Stripes to Beyonce, and Carnival Collective.

Roots Manuva (real name Rodney Smith) is the biggest star to have headlined Fiesta in the Park, a crucial fundraiser established two years ago to raise money for the Cowley Road Carnival - a huge colourful procession which attracts around 30,000 people a year but exists entirely on donations.

The carnival has struggled for money in the last three years because of cuts to arts and regeneration funding.

Roots Manuva, who won a MOBO in 1999 for his debut album Brand New, Second Hand, is renowned for colourful and unusual collaborations including teaming up with; Gorillaz, Audio Bullys, Leftfield, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Beth Orton, DJ Shadow, Kila Kella and The Macabees.

His song Witness (One Hope) was voted the Greatest UK Hip Hop track of all time by the readers of Hip Hop Connection.

Festival producer Autumn Neagle said, "It is great that Roots Manuva will give us a taste of his new album at Fiesta in the Park".

"We are incredibly proud and excited to invite Roots Manuva to South Park. I was keen to ask Roots as he is a real champion of British hip hop and urban music, which really fits with the spirit of carnival".

"He is one of the most respected British lyricists from the past 20 years, a genuinely original artist and a positive force for aspiring young musicians, so it’s great that young people can come and enjoy the show too".

"Roots is looking forward to performing and happy to be asked to take part to support the carnival".

Tickets for Fiesta in The Park are from £10 and on sale now from, plus local in person outlets Pegasus, Truck Store, SS20 and O2 Academy Oxford.
