Straight outta South Yorks comes “the rap Jonnie Briggs” and Sheffield’s one-man answer to the Beastie Boys; the gob-wobbling, microphone-bothering rap powerhouse known as Kid Acne. Romance Ain’t Dead is an 11 track short, sharp shock to the ear drums that’s filled with more bangers than an overstocked sausage factory and is one of the funniest yet slickest albums you’ll have heard all year.

Out and out chatty bastard Kid Acne brings a refreshing attitude and ethos in his hip-hop - effortlessly combining humorous, often hilarious, unpretentious lyrics with a couldn’t give a flying f*ck attitude, all the while avoiding any unpleasant odors of irony or novelty. With previous releases on his own Invisible Spies label and a brace of highly-entertaining, crowd rocking live shows firmly stowed under his belt, Kid Acne [aka Ackers, aka Ken Acid, aka Kidney Ache, aka Eddy Fresh] is now perfectly poised to make the leap from local underground rap legend to nationwide musical treasure. A modern day renaissance man, Ackers is also an acclaimed graffiti artist and illustrator having exhibited in galleries the world over, created his own comic book, designed numerous record sleeves, flyers not to mention an entire T-shirt range for Prada.

Romance Ain’t Dead’s many highlights include: the straight up braggadocio warning shots of opener Eddy Fresh; Don’t Pity Me’s autobiographical tales of Acne’s acid fuelled hospital trip and first exposure to NWA; the blazing, fuzzed-out 2,3 Break It; South Yorkshire tourist board’s worst nightmare come true in South Yorks and the final rowdy jamboree of forthcoming single Sliding Doors.

The brains behind the mighty and thunderous production gracing all 11 blistering tracks belong to Brighton based Req One and Acker’s fellow Sheffield resident Ross Orton. Req looked after the initial sampling and beat programming, then Ross and his trusty turd polishing techniques took the helm, refining the drums, adding big shiny wheels and an oversized exhaust pipe, and generally turbo-charging the whole sound.

Previously one-third of electro outfit Fat Truckers, Mr Orton other credits and credentials include production on MIA’s Mercury Nominated Arular and forthcoming Kala albums and holding down drum duties for Jarvis Cocker. The net sonic result and backdrop here is one of raw and potent stripped-down hip-hop, heavily spiked with old school rave and punk sounds.

The forthcoming Sliding Doors single is released 3rd September, ahead of Romance Ain’t Dead, both through Lex / EMI. Kid Acne will soon be braving the M1 for a one-off London live show at the Barfly on 9th August.

Album Release Date: 17th September.
