BASS Festival (British Arts and Street Sounds) is the UK’s only month-long celebration of Black Music and Art, and it returns this June for a celebration of African music and culture. Taking place for the fourth consecutive year, BASS will play host to a range of events in venues across London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester and Derby. There will also be satellite events in Manchester and Edinburgh. Below are some of this year’s highlights.
Over the past nine years, rapper and writer Bigg Jigg has been on his grind and is now ready to prove why he is the next top Hip-Hop artist out of the Midwest. The Chicago born rapper has taken his animated style and intense lyrical ability and created a movement that stems from his hometown throughout the Midwest and all the way down to Florida.

Mecca2Medina have been in existence for eleven years. The group was formed by Rakin after he was given advice by his Sheikh to continue using his musical talents to make Islamic music. Before that Rakin was part of a UK group called Cash Crew they were one of the most successful groups in the UK Hip Hop scene in the late 1980's to early 1990's.
Italian-Canadian rapper / producer Carvelli is set to release his latest EP The Movement. Included in this release is his smash single of the same name, which is a call to all rappers and hip-hop lovers of Italian heritage to band together and create their own world-wide movement.
New US hip-hop sensation, Asher Roth, whose debut single I Love College looks set to match its huge US success when it’s released here on May 11th, will play a special one-off date at the Tabernacle in West London on May 7th. The show at this famous, and recently refurbished, London venue which played host to, among others, Pink Floyd and The Clash back in the day, will be Roth’s first ever UK date and promises to be a memorable night.

On Friday, May 1st, DSSF proudly presents, I Shoot People, a collection of Hip-Hop photography by SF’s own Trevor Traynor. The opening reception will feature special musical performances by Richie Cunning and Melina Jones, two of SF’s fiercest Hip Hop MC’s, while Ren The Vinyl Archeologist will be holding down the turntables throughout the night.
A-Stout is the new international hip-hop sensation made up of rappers Rootwords (U.S.A. / Zambia) and Larynx (Ghana), and producer VLM (Mexico). The three met in Geneva, Switzerland and have been rocking the international underground scene since 2000 appearing on many mix tapes and at large-venue concerts.
Heralded as one of the best live shows in the world at the moment, the momentum gathering behind the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is nothing short of staggering. Booked to play Glastonbury, The Big Chill, Lovebox and many more of the premier festivals in Europe this summer, Hypnotic are set to be a huge draw wherever they play.

Comprised of blaring majestic horns, dusty vintage keyboards, and fierce earthquaking percussion, the Souljazz Orchestra is redefining Canadian groove with its own potent blend of Funk, Soul, Jazz, Afrobeat, African and Latin music. The band was founded in 2002, when a group of young musicians of mixed cultural origins were united by their common allegiance to the grittier side of rare groove music.
Bay Area based MYX Music Label signed Kam Moye a.k.a. Supastition to its roster of stellar artists for his newest project entitled Splitting Image, to be released autumn '09. This collaborative venture is an exciting move for Kam Moye, as he has adopted a new artistic direction, which is being fully supported and encouraged by MYX Music Label.

MYX Music Label began in 2007 by industry veteran Karim Panni of the Boom Bap Project (Rhymesayers Entertainment). MYX Music Label is under the umbrella of MYX TV, which is the only music and lifestyle channel dedicated to the Asian American community.
