Pied Piper – A Hip Hop Dance Revolution is a bold, contemporary and exciting work of dance theatre that premiered at Theatre Royal Stratford East in September 2006. It went on to sell out for two weeks, breaking the record for attendance at an urban dance performnace in the UK and winning the 2007 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliated Theatre.
In the production, Hamelin is transformed into an urban underworld where the rats are a group of hooded ASBOS and the Pied Piper is sent to rid the town of this vermin. Within the walls plastered in graffiti and garbage and bleak grey fencing, a company of thirty seven performers produce an electric display of streetdance, vividly telling the story in dance theatre with no dialogue.
The 90-minute show is produced by award winning director & designer ULTZ; celebrated dancer, choreographer and Nike Athlete Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy; and legendary UK Hip Hop music producer Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante.
Pied Piper- A Hip Hop Dance Revolution opens at the Barbican on Thursday 5th March.
