Another bank holiday and another SoulBrew party to see in your 4 day weekend in style. In the 5 years since the SoulBrew parties began – it’s been all about the party, the drama, the dancefloor and the music. Bringing London’s notoriously genre driven tribes into one happy family with a mish mash of Funk, Soul, Hip-Hop, Boogie, Reggae, Disco and House that keeps them coming back time and time again.
Whilst booking some of their favourite DJs from around the world from Cash Money to Kerri Chandler has undoubtedly helped, it is the fun loving residents and founders Andy Bird & DJ Spin Doctor and their merry band of SoulBrew regulars who make this party what it has grown into over the 5 years. Whether playing House, Hip-Hop or all points between these two know how to rock a party & the crowds queuing round the block for their recent NYE party tended to agree.
To celebrate their fifth birthday SoulBrew are reaching out with their most ambitious line up to date in the fantastic warehouse space of London’s Electrowerkz in Angel with a three floored extravaganza headlined by three artists who we feel perfectly represent what SoulBrew are all about; Danny Krivit, Jazzie B & DJ Vadim.
In what is his first UK gig for nearly a year, we are delighted to welcome none other than New York’s finest Danny Krivit headlining our house room, a man who embodies the term ‘Veteran DJ’. From an apprenticeship at the legendary Paradise Garage to his Body & Soul night with Francois K and Joe Clausell to an endless succession of disco re-edits, to his recent 718 Sessions in New York, no other DJ quite represents the common bond between dance music today and dance music of yesteryear. A quite simply fantastic DJ we are delighted to welcome him to the SoulBrew floor for a 5 hour set, with warm up duties supplied by the multi talented Ben Chapman from BBE.
In the downstairs Boogie & Soul room we are joined by a true London legend and Mr Soul II Soul himself Jazzie B. The original funky dread has helped shape the sound of dance music in the UK and was a true inspiration for the UK soul scene in the 1980s and since. He will be bringing the sounds that inspired him into music for this downstairs soul session. Jazzie will be joined by the man behind the Mastercuts series and the recent reinvention of Salsoul, Ian Dewhirst.
A soul boy extraordinaire, Ian’s tales are legendary and with a history like his no wonder. From Djing at the Wigan Casino, to forming Shalamar, partying with George Clinton, A&R-ing Maze and Ashford & Simpson, and establishing the Mastercuts series (who’s Classic Rare Groove albums are still a SoulBrew top 10!!). A great DJ with a record collection of over 20,000, we know he’s gonna be picking out some gems!
The relative youngster in this room is one half of the re-edit kings Yam Who? With a great track record of producing the finest re-mixes and edits of the last few years his Jazz drenched Soul infused sounds are inspired by the 80s Boogie and 70s Soul that he will be playing tonight, and completing the line up will be Neil Maclean from Southampton’s fabulous Emotive night.
In the loft room we welcome one of the driving forces in hip hop and dance music over the last 10 years DJ Vadim. From producing on Ninja Tunes, djing in any country you care to mention, running a label, to even finding time for the occasional spot of painting the man does not stop! With the release of his latest album “The Sound Catcher” on BBE Records on 1st April he will be playing tracks from this with a mix of classic Hip-Hop & Funk.
He is joined by Hip-Hop legend Mr Thing. A longtime SoulBrew associate & compiler of BBE’s “Kings Of Hip-Hip” alongside DJ Premier, he made his name as one of the Scratch Perverts. Now a member of the Extended Playerz Mr Thing is one of the most respected & popular Hip-Hop DJs on the scene and is sure to bring a his block rocking skills to proceedings.
There will also be a Cybersoul Record Stall, a cinema showing vintage Russ Meyer porn and a birthday tuck shop!
