Bawo - Legitimate Cause

With eyes firmly set on him, West London’s rap talent Bawo releases his much anticipated EP Legitimate Cause. The seven track release comes shortly after the latest single and video drop ‘Not Just Yet‘ which he unleashed early this month.

Throughout Legitimate Cause, Bawo proclaims how serious he is taking his music career, making it clear that his intentions are to continue his journey through the ranks as one of the UK’s most exciting new prospects. The themes explored through the artwork are tongue-in-cheek references to Bawo stepping into the professional phase of his career.

Project opener ‘Phase One‘ aptly kicks off the EP, a record that sees Bawo spitting reflective verses over an acoustic piano backdrop before a full band kicks into life for an extended outro. Here, Bawo details the changes to his life since he began releasing music – “they say life goes through phases, I’m in the part where they know what my face is“. Next comes ‘Same Team‘, the first single Bawo shared from the project in November last year. Produced by Oscar #Worldpeace and featuring exciting fellow rapper Reek0, the track explores the strength in asking for help and the importance of genuine friendship. The track received support from BBC Radio 1‘s Jack Saunders, as well as plays from NTS, Kiss Fresh and Reprezent FM.

Picking up the energy and pace, ‘Turn and Face‘ brings a more electronic-leaning vibe with the production while Bawo narrates a rocky situation with a love interest, embellished with layers of catchy ad-libs. Continuing on the theme of romance and heartbreak is ‘Not Just Yet‘, the most recent single released from the project which has garnered a strong spread of support across Radio 1, 1Xtra, KISS FM, Rinse FM and Reprezent FM. The track details the start of two people getting to know each other romantically, but suddenly losing their connection due to miscommunication. Bawo shows the breadth of his talents as he delivers an earworm chorus and delicious layers of vocal melodies.

Following this is ‘Figured Out‘, the focus track of the EP. Driven by ethereal synth-led production and laidback 808s, Bawo romantically avows, “I’m only one man, but you know I’ll do my best for you, and when it simmers down, I know you know I got it figured out“. The beauty of Bawo’s storytelling is his honesty and the vivid relatability of the scenes he paints, with this song showing a more vulnerable side to him. From here, we move into the emotive ‘Grace Is Calling‘, featuring a smooth verse from Oscar #Worldpeace. The track opens with majestic strings and gorgeous female harmony runs before Bawo delivers a self-assured and self-affirming verse.

Concluding the project is UKG banger ‘Stay Close‘, giving a true flavour of Bawo’s diversity and eclecticism. The track closes the EP with a confident energy and bravado, with a catchy hook that has become a signature part of Bawo’s sound.

The release of Legitimate Cause precedes Bawo’s debut headline UK tour, ‘The Conference Tour‘, which kicks off in Cardiff on 2nd March and stops in his hometown of London on 11th March at a sold-out ICA. He will be joined by Reek0 in London, Brighton, Manchester and Birmingham, with BXKS supporting his Bristol show, while Luke RV and Kiddus step out for his date in Cardiff.

Having carved out a tremendous start to 2023, Bawo’s year ahead is set to be his most career-defining to date.
