First Man is a production duo comprised of Adam Midgely and Jamie Reddington who first got together in 2001 and have produced for some big names like Lemar and Skinnyman. This release on Silent Soundz features four excellently produced UK hip-hop cuts featuring a variety of vocal contributions from Skinnyman, Black Twang, Ayak and finally major label soul singer Charlie Brown as well as Yungun.
The release kicks off with Set It Off, a heavy, big sounding piano riffed track on which Skinnyman delivers some verses which big up First Man and explains how they produced some beats for his Council Estate Of Mind LP. Skinny’s delivery is very clearly dictated, but it does feel as though he is keeping some of his talent in reserve. Alongside Skinny we have Full Cycle’s first lady, Tali dropping the chorus, and together the track is a real bumper.
01. Set It Off ft. Skinnyman
02. Help Them ft. Black Twang
03. How I Feel ft. Ayak
04. That Girl ft. Charlie Brown & Yungun
Second up Blak Twang gets busy on Help Them, a bubbling head nodder with a multitude of stabs and drum rolls. Subject matter takes the form of therapy and blueprint for other MCs to fix up their game.
Next is How I Feel a summery vibed song which features Ayak, who comes off a bit in the style of Estelle, i.e. she is an MC and vocalist who is also a recent signing to DJ Hi-Tek’s production company.
Last but not least we see Yungun who as ever drops nicely alongside new major label soul star in the making, Charlie Brown. This is a quality release which suitably does the job of showcasing the diversity of First Man’s work and abilitity to link with quality vocalists all whilst maintaining their soulful signature sound.
