The internet is a powerful tool, as we here at BritishHipHop well know. In our digital age artists can become huge without having a deal or selling a song purely from internet buzz and virtual popularity. Streetz Myspace page claims he has received over two million views and three million plays making him hot property in cyber space but the real question is does his music stand up to all the hype?
The answer is yes and no. I Want This Chick (as the clean version is known) is a generic autotuned piece of music TV friendly commercial fodder which possibly wont win any awards for originality but could definitely prove very successful.
The internet gives any and everyone the chance to become famous but with more new rappers appearing with carbon copy styles and sounds hip-hop is in real danger of stagnating. Hip-hop’s fate lies not only in the hands of the MC’s and producers coming up but the record buying public who vote for the sound of the times by spending there hard earned dosh on what they like.
If Streetz can convert his internet figures into record sales he could be huge. That is unless Mike Skinner sues him for copying his name.
