Ultra_eko - Disconnect Part One

In his latest video Ultra_eko delivers an interesting blend and emotional cadence to the way that the song swings back and forth. The Croydon artist delivers a mix of optimism and defiance within the lyricism and his also delivery shares this ability to find a balance between the two competing feelings. This tension helps to define the track, to give it a greater sense of meaning.

Taking inspiration from Tyler, The Creator he keeps things unexpected by featuring some unusual twists and turns, purposefully disorientating listener expectations. The song’s buildup brings to mind the svelte electronic stylings of Flying Lotus, and the house elements bring to mind some of Kerri Chandler’s work, for it has that same sense of timelessness.

Yet, for all these touchstones, Ultra_eko manages to sculpt his unique approach. The patience found here adds to the emotional resonance. Within the first minute, each reiteration adds to the disorientation for the multi-faceted, multi-layered qualities. Done with such dignity by the time the groove establishes itself it gains that additional power.

His voice is mixed front and centre stage. Unlike some of his more morose work, this one seems to be searching for hope, and optimism of sorts. It never quite settles upon that sense of comfort yet the fact that the journey is even happening seems to be a turning point within the greater narrative he has formed throughout his career.

Something of a hallmark, perhaps this is the moment where the search for the light begins. “A Disconnect, Part One” has a power to it for Ultra_eko makes sure to craft a narrative, one that has a raw realness to it, full of reflection with a sense of purpose.

Look out for this on the forthcoming album ‘On Trial, Part Two‘ out on June 3 2022.
