Paul White - For You And For Me / We Want it All 7" [One Handed Music]

South London’s answer to Dilla? Hyperbole? Boring reference point? Maybe. But taking the baton from the deceased legend, as well as Bleep-Hop purveyors Oh No, Flying Lotus and Mark Pritchard, TV library composer Paul White applies his considerable arrangement skills to off kilter, electronic instrumental Hip Hop in his spare time. And jolly good it is too.

His second and best 7 inch offering ‘For You And For Me’ is a deceptively simple concoction built around an enormous synth line. Although you kind of want it to go somewhere it just relentlessly bangs your head into submission like some sort of industrial piston. The only thing missing is a Guilty Simpson vocal.

B-side ‘We Want it All’ is not as immediate and at first seems too noisy and random but eventually sucks you in with its distorted bass and choice vocal snatches. Paul’s original, left field production definitely hits the spot and it’s earned him props from names such as Giles Peterson, Danny Breaks, IG Culture and other heads in the know. With instrumental Hip Hop garnering more interest than ever before and even threatening to become trendy, he’s chosen a good time to showcase his wears.
