Following on from his last mixtape The Intermission in 2010, north-London rapper Ikes presents his latest project, The Intermission:Last Call. Mainly produced by long-term collaborator Maleek Berry of Port Mayfair, The Intermission:Last Call depicts Ikes’ transition from starting out in the music industry to being on the brink of creating a show-stopping body of work and cementing his place within the UK music scene.
Hear Me Out opens the project with a haunting intro into the track where the 25-year-old gets some things off his chest about the journey of his career and his determination to be a champion. The champion theme continues on the track The Last Call with excerpts from a speech by boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
The Intermission:Last Call also sees Ikes collaborating with fellow rapper Bigz on the up-tempo track Get Money, as well as with rapper Scorcher and singer Jermaine Riley, on Ikes’ current single, GirlTalk. GirlTalk has been championed by BBC 1Xtra, premiering exclusively on Ace and Vis’ show as a ‘Fantastic Four’ track and also featuring on DJ Target’s 100% Homegrown Download podcast for ‘Unsigned Track Of The Week’.
Additional production comes from the German duo, The Cratez, on the track What’s It Gonna Be, whom Ikes has been working with from his first mixtape P2P and The Intermission, and also Black Russian, who produced Livin’ The Life.
Bonus track Tailormade, which was released late 2011, closes the nine-track project, which Ikes describes as, “very layered, nearly always melody driven and high class for the lovers of real music”.
