Contrary to popular belief, the fairer sex have made some noteworthy contributions to this shit we call Hip Hop. Unfortunately most of them were over 20 years ago. The exploitative ‘sex sells’ madness of the Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown era hasn’t helped matters either. Still, you can’t keep a true B-Girl down and Soul Jazz are representing hard here, assembling a slick retrospective of mainly late 80’s girl on mic action.
Many classics are present and correct: JJ Fad, Tanya Winley, Princess MC, Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte and Queen Latifah can all be found applying their not so dulcet tones to loud drum machine beats – and there’s not a Salt or Pepa in sight.
This is a first rate snapshot of a time when having a fanny wasn’t a gimmick and it was more about what came out of your mouth than out of your bra. Probably best really. Have you seen Sparky D?
