Practise makes perfect. The annual Vauxhall UK Beatbox Championships were every bit as exciting as the first. Brighton based beat box extraordinaire Beardyman – Darren Foreman managed to scoop the coveted title for the second year in succession, seeing of competition from seven other regional finalists; this was Beardy’s time to shine.
For those who are still unfamiliar with this art form, beatboxing is the art of vocal percussion whereby artists use their mouth and hands to create music.
Judges on the night included Shlomo & Scratch of the Roots, who were impressed by Beardymans fresh and creatively innovative performance. The electric crowd were dazzled by the brilliance of all the contestants, some of us wondering how anyone could do such magical things with their mouth. The Carling Academy, Islington was full to capacity and brimming with energy.
Shlomo immediately praised Beardymans performance by saying, “We were looking for routines that were fresh and as original as possible; we like innovation, creativity and imagination, and once again Beardyman came up trumps”.
Beardyman also scooped the grand prize of a brand new Vauxhall Corsa SXi for his efforts; not bad for a night’s work!!! Darren was ecstatic with winning a £12000 car as last years prize was a mere microphone!
