Philosophical, reflective, optimistic: Jehst as the mayor of ‘One Horse Town‘ is the drifter returning to a higher plain. Warmth and a sense of community rise from brass band arrangements, mutedly yet poignantly playing to an innocently glacial melody, and a gospel-style choir whose quiet resonance achieves inner peace.
After typical navigation through the maze of his mind, Jehst’s findings are once again verified by Confucius MC (CoN & KwAkE, Old Paradice), and the effervescent Eva Lazarus (Mungo’s Hi Fi, Swindle, The Nextmen) provides soulful salvation to see the track through.
Production comes from Trinidad-based producer Taharka, the engineer behind the boards for Birmingham rapper Sonnyjim‘s recently launched We Buy Gold label and production house.
Jehst’s career – long “at the forefront of UK Hip Hop” (The Guardian) – has spanned the pre-millennium ‘Premonitions‘, his ever-dependable YNR imprint releasing essential material including his 2017 album ‘Billy Green is Dead‘ (“a qualified triumph” – The Wire), and 2020 mid-pandemic bar-fest ‘State of the Union (Freestyle)’, taken from the ‘Heathens‘ EP.
2022 has seen Jehst collaborations with Lunar C, Jam Baxter, Ramson Badbonez and Onoe Caponoe: all good looks when it comes to making the game his own again on February 3rd with new album ‘Mork Calling Orson‘.
