‘A Hip Hop Journey: 50 Years Of Kulture‘ – a new exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first block party and formation of kulture – is coming to Leeds City Museum from 28 July 2023 – 24 March 2024.
Co-curated with Leeds Museums and Galleries and the volunteer-run Hip Hop Historian Society, this exhibition will showcase the history of the ground breaking movement and its impact in Leeds, for the first time.
Working with inspirational local artists, renowned record shops, and communities from Leeds and Yorkshire, the exhibition will bring together stories and objects which promote and cultivate the positive Hip Hop ethos and values of justice, peace, respect, self-worth, community, and having fun.

The exhibition will also pay homage to pioneering MCs like MC Daddy Speedo, and independent record labels such as Low Life, YNR, Firstwords, and Invizible Circle.
There will be a range of workshops and celebratory events marking DJ Kool Herc’s landmark block party and the 49th Hip Hop History Month’s community day, please visit Leeds City Museum’s website for the full events programme, to include musical performances and workshops from break-dancers, beatboxers, graffiti artists, and DJs.
