The Nigerian born, Lewisham raised tour de force that is Shaybo marks her return with the swaggering and defiant new single ‘Get It‘.
On ‘Get It‘ we find Shaybo in peak form, rapping in her signature style, effortlessly blending hard-nosed grit with a sensual allure and quick-witted charm. Her verses are brimming with the high-level wordplay and braggadocious flair found in the myriad of freestyles released through the years that propelled her to the forefront of UK rap.
The instrumental, produced by GRAMMY nominated production duo Legendury Beatz (the producers behind the generation defining Afrobeats hits ‘Ojuelegba‘ and ‘Essence‘ by Wizkid) is equally infectious as Shaybo‘s bars. Driven by its full-figured bassline and shuffling groove, the beat provides the perfect environment for Shaybo to unleash her tirade, and bears all the trademarks of a classic rap cut.
‘Get It‘ serves as a reintroduction to the scene for Shaybo, whose debut body of work Queen Of The South released in 2021 and cemented her as one of the most exciting and dextrous voices in the UK Rap / Drill landscape. The title and theme of the project was inspired by a Netflix series of the same name, which follows Teresa Mendoza – a woman who survives a hostile environment to rise through the ranks and become a kingpin. Shaybo found similarities between this story and her own, thus the project was born.
With a short list of carefully selected collaborators including Jorja Smith, Wale, Haile and DreamDoll, the project presents the vast breadth of Shaybo‘s artistry as she pivots effortlessly between her larger than life, brazen persona and displaying a more vulnerable and sentimental side to the world.
Although Shaybo came to prominence around the time of the pandemic with a succession of viral freestyles and singles (‘HB Freestyle‘, ‘Daily Duppy‘, ‘Anger‘ and ‘Dobale‘), she was putting in work for almost a decade prior, with a string of cult street-freestyles on grassroots YouTube channels including PDTV, RAPCITYTV and BL@CKBOX. Her merging of UK Rap, Dancehall and UK Drill sounds has allowed Shaybo to quickly become a fan favourite, who through years of dedication sounds equally confident in whichever arena she enters.
‘Get It‘ is a statement piece for Shaybo‘s return to the limelight. Exhibiting her elite-tier lyricism and delivery on the track, Shaybo‘s razor sharp ability has clearly not dulled a touch during her brief hiatus. The combination of sheer rapping ability and the song’s imaginative, infectious production signals an exciting new chapter in the young artist’s career.
