After spending years creating an underground buzz over 30+ live shows, refreshing duo The Shellers are now ready to make their debut with their exhilarating first single ‘Work No More‘. Made up of keys player/producer Lawaun Bernard and vocalist/songwriter Jamal Bucanon, The Shellers are ready to make noise this summer.
Championed by none other than Toddla T who co-produced the record, ‘Work No More’ melds The Shellers’ live band setup with Toddla’s roots in soundsystem and club culture for an undeniably British flavour. Sharing his experiences of working with the group, Toddla says, “Working with The Shellers was a joy. We share a lot of musical influences, and it pushed me further. From not only an art point of view but from a friendship point of view, it was all rewarding”.
Kicking the Monday Blues, vocalist Jamal delivers an infectious melodic hook for the chorus with a message that audiences will be sure to resonate with.
Jamal paints a vivid picture with this description: “When you take three trains to get work you come to the realisation WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND wants to go to work everyday for someone else and earn a minimum amount, to just be a number, who wants to do that right? The song speaks to those who have goals and dreams of another life while holding down a job they don’t want to be in, something we can all relate to”.
Having met at London university BIMM during a songwriting class, Jamal and Lawaun decided to do a few studio sessions together which sparked their early beginnings as a duo. Listing Amy Winehouse, Kendrick Lamar and Gorillaz as some of their biggest musical inspirations, the range of this talent mirrors their approach to making music, with no two songs sounding the same.
After impressively putting together an eleven piece band, they have shelled down over thirty shows across east and west London’s live circuits – one of which was for Hak Baker’s event Thirsty Thursdays where the crowd were roaring for more. They’ve taken time over the last few years to refine their sound, which they call “a playlist of different music and genres”.
The perfect introduction to their hybrid sound, ‘Work No More’ is a strong insight into the world of The Shellers, with more heat still to come this year.
