Hampshire-based producer / artist Hughdem returns with his first solo project, “Enter The Dillaverse“, a seven track release which pays homage to one of his greatest influences, J Dilla. A love letter to the works of the legendary Detroit producer, this project pays tribute to Jay Dee while establishing his own aesthetic as an artist.
Interpolating and reimagining seven classic Dilla joints, taking them on a journey through Hughdem’s left-field production style, travelling through soulful boom bap, psychedelic trap, alt-R&B and spacey Hip Hop. Innovative reworks of Dilla-produced tracks like “Get Dis Money“, “Runnin’” and “Players“, remaking the OG samples and revising them through warped vocals, reversed samples, melodic guitars, synths and 808’s.
As much a personal project as a tribute, his punchy lyrics draw on experiences and tales of youthful memories, city life, romance, social commentary, dead ends, and chasing your dreams. Showing a range of emotions, from heartfelt reflections and brooding to MC bravado and cypher-ready verses, all peppered with bouncy flows and wordplay throughout.
A cohesive yet varied collection of tracks, this EP makes for an interesting cosmic tour made with the vision of an artist and the love of a fan. “Enter The Dillaverse” is now available on all streaming platforms.
