Chalk

Chalk, real name Dan Chalk, is a Hip Hop artist from Manchester, UK. Chalk found a love for Hip Hop music at the age of eleven in the mid-nineties after discovering acts such as A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. Inspired by such acts, he first started making music at eighteen years old with local friends Aver (Move78, Village Live Records) and Bill Sykes (The Bluntskins) forming the Hip Hop crew The Natural Curriculum.

In 2013, Chalk released his first solo album ‘One For Being Me‘ on vinyl and digital. The album was an introspective look into his life experiences, his humour and creative thoughts expressed over soulful and jazzy beats. Two songs from the album gained radio airplay on 6Music by Lauren Laverne.

In 2015, Chalk released an EP entitled ‘The Pretty Cool EP‘ and in 2016, his sophomore full length album ‘Growth‘, which stuck to his recipe of soul and jazz sampled beats and introspective lyric content. In the same year he also featured on The Natural Curriculum vinyl release titled ‘The Best Fertiliser Is The Gardener’s Shadow‘.

Now eight years since his last release, Chalk is back with his own independent record label Odd Particle Records and the first vinyl release ‘Death Knocks And He Shall Die‘. Death Knocks And He Shall Die is an instrumental album themed as an imaginary Motion Picture Soundtrack inspired by Film Noir and Italian Giallo movies. The album uses dialogue taken from numerous movies to tell a story of seduction and murder, soundtracked by jazzy grooves, haunting melodies and horror soundscapes which have been put together with a boom-bap approach.
