Wish Master has seen his career grow rapidly over the past 3 years. From being one of the most important up and coming emcees to emerge from Bristol, to supporting Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah, and being the first Bristol rapper to record at the legendary BBC Maida Vale after being featured on the impressive BBC Music Introducing Ones to Watch in 2019.
On the ‘A Beautiful Mess E.P‘, he partners with fellow Bristol born producer and rapper Hozay, whose impressive and diverse back catalogue spreads across the UK.
With skits lifted from the classic movie New Jack City, the project has a distinct crime-saga theme that goes hand in hand with the cinematic wordplay and beats.
The duo have released a project that is rich with social commentary, set against a nostalgic East Coast hip-hop tone that keeps the E.P sounding gritty and authentic, all using fresh beats made without any samples.
With features from Eto, one of NY’s hottest rising stars as well as Bristol talent Datkid, Axel Holy and Matey Boy, this project delivers six hard hitting songs which hold their own and also show a cohesive run throughout.
‘Fully Loaded‘ is one of the stand out tracks off the E.P, as Wish Master delivers a reflective and powerful message that would appeal to fans of Mobb Deep or Kool G Rap. Featuring lines of “gotta stay focussed, keep my mind upon the prize/while constructing an enterprise“. Communicating the entrepreneurial spirt of the emcee, Wish Master is a detailed and nostalgic rapper, speaking home truths and holding nothing to chance with his music.
On the project’s title track, a haunting piano introduces the rapper, coming in strong with his verse, as Hozay rhymes “make a wish/I’m taking flicks with the wordplay/return like Christ on the third day“. The track debuts the duo in the mix rallying back and forth with one another, creating a single that pushes the E.P to new heights. Hozay leaves not only an impressive production across the E.P, but his feature showcases his breadth of talent.
‘Real G’s‘ is another strong and powerful production that has Wish Master pushing positivity and keeping your head up in challenging times. The lyrics on the second verse highlight the detailed talent of the artist, rhyming “OR president, Illion ambassador/ king on my pursuit you’re just passenger/ all my team professional the rest a bunch of amateur/ you ain’t got calibre let alone the character / my art Galileo mix with Liberace“. A key feature of Wish Master’s lyricism – the ability to create clever lines to reflect his drive and ambition to be a stand out and fearless rapper.
The E.P is an intriguing and fearless release that is sure to take the two artists’ career to new levels. With more heads starting to turn towards Bristol’s music scene, it is definitely in part due to the work that Wish Master and Hozay have been putting in.
