Signalling his return to music, independent Birmingham rapper Thai Mason delivers a laid back, boom-bap single titled ‘Coasting‘ which is out now.
The funk and jazz infused track is a thoughtful yet assured introspection into the rapper’s life which blends the overcast palette of his current reality with the aspirations of a more colourful future. Production handled by Bearcubs, provides the perfect groove as synth keys glitter over a crunchy, saturated drum loop and a funk infused bassline; creating a vibe that is both dreamy and immediate.
After initially emerging on the scene back in 2014 with his popular track ‘Drunk‘ (produced by French producer FKJl) it quickly collected hundreds of thousands of plays on SoundCloud and received support from the likes of DJ Target on BBC Radio 1XTRA and more.
This early success initiated a bright beginning in the rapper’s career and led him into collaborations with reputable names such as Salute, Karma Kid, El. Train amongst others, which is a testament to his talents and ability as an artist.
Following a string of single releases, Thai Mason went on to deliver his debut mixtape As Above, So Below, which has collected over 1.5million plays on Spotify and had singles featured online across the likes of Complex, DUMMY and Earmilk.
During his hiatus the multi-faceted artist has taught himself how to produce and added armoury to his creative talents. Spending his time creating a range of new music, Thai Mason delves into the extremely weighted subject of grief, using his personal experience with the loss of a parent to craft a piece of work that meditates on the transformative nature of death.
It is safe to say that Thai Mason is ready to take his artistry to the next level, with ‘Coasting’ marking the beginning of a new chapter.
